The friendly Asian tiger island at a guided missile's length from China, Taiwan is the island where, post-World War II, the overthrown, anti-communist Republic Of China government fled to.
Taiwan had been colonized by the Japanese for the previous 50 years and now the Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek arrived to impose his martial ways for the coming decades until his death.
Since then, although Taiwan has become a leading economy, only a handful of banana republics dare to recognize Taiwan's de facto independence and sovereignty in defiance of China's make-believe claims that Taiwan is their renegade province, their treasure island.
